On the 24th of the instant I informed you by telegraph that the question could not be reconsidered;
and I now request you to inform the petitioners that I have given careful consideration to the arguments advanced by them, but under the circumstances of the Colony I see no reason for departing from the decision already arrived at in this matter announced in 1881. I have accordingly been unable to advise Her Majesty to grant the prayer of the Petition.
34. As regards the arrangements to be made in future for religious services at the Gaol and Hospital, I have to refer to the despatches noted in the margin, in which the arrangement now in force for the appointment of a Roman Catholic Chaplain for such services was settled, and it was decided that on a similar occasion of a vacancy in the Colonial Chaplaincy a similar principle should be followed.
